Youth and youth-oriented auxiliaries and programs at Brookland are on the move. Amazingly, we have accomplished great things — including nine ( count them ) "9" Eagle Scouts!!! Our Girl Scouts have participated as S.C. legislative pages and seven girls have earned the Silver Award (second highest). Our Junior Missionaries regularly attend local and state conventions. Our Just Say No Club, which includes an improvisational drama group, has received several awards and has been featured in TV newscasts and newspaper stories. Our Mentoring Programs have a number of active matches in which adults share quality time with youth in various activities and monitor their schoolwork. Our youth are recognized through the Progressive Auxiliary’s “Spotlight on Youth” report in the church bulletin on each third Sundays, and annually through its spring “Spotlight on Youth Banquet.” During the summer months, Teen Fresh fills the void with an extensive program.
Additionally, several auxiliaries offer youth-oriented activities. The school year begins with Back to School Prayer Night in August. In 2000, it was expanded to a three-day revival and a Contemporary Youth Watch Night Service was held simultaneously with the traditional Watch Night. More than 850 youth attended. The Academic Ministry sponsors “Education Day” in March and an end-of-the-year Education Program in June, in which students are recognized for Honor Roll report cards and attending the Tutorial Program. The Education Ministry awards scholarships to graduating seniors and the Brotherhood awards one to a graduating male senior.
The Youth Department, along with the Counseling Center, sponsors Quarterly Youth Forums, and with the Recreation Center, it sponsors monthly Teen Social Fellowships and a Fall Festival. The Brotherhood sponsors an annual picnic for our boys, a “Father-Daughter Banquet,” and “Breakfast with the Stars,” a program in which successful individuals share the secrets of their success with our teenagers.
The Sunday school, of course, has a variety of classes and programs for our youth, including the traditional Christmas and Easter programs, and a weeklong Vacation Bible School in June followed by the annual Sunday School picnic.
On the first and third Sundays at 6 p.m., separate Youth and Teenagers’ Bible classes are held. The Youth Choir and the Teens in Praise choir both sing at the 11 a.m. worship on the third Sundays, which is always Youth Emphasis Sunday. Junior Ushers serve on the third and fourth Sundays. Children’s Worship services, for ages 5 to 11, are held at 11 a.m. each Sunday, except the third, as well as at 8:15 a.m. on the second and fourth Sundays. The Nursery/Preschool is also available. We are on the move!
