A Man Who is in His Right Mind
"A Man Who is in His Right Mind"
A Man Who is in His Right Mind Bible Study
Mark 5:15"And when they came to Jesus, they saw the man who used to have the mob of demons in him. He was sitting there, clothed and in his right mind, and they were all afraid.
The scene of our text opens in verse one by saying "And they came to the other side of the sea." You would not want to move so quickly from verse one. For it was not an ordinary coming over to the other side of the sea. It was extraordinary. They didn't come to the other side of the sea after an uneventful and peaceful crossing as they enjoyed the scenic sights of a calm Sea of Galilee. No, they came through a storm.
When you back up to verse 35 of chapter 4, you hear Jesus saying, "let us pass over unto the other side."
You will see Jesus and the disciples getting into a boat and upon beginning to sail. Verse 37 says, "a great storm of wind arose" ‑ not a shower; not a few sprinkles; not a drizzle ‑ but a great windstorm arose. Jesus was in the back of the boat sound asleep; so his disciples woke Him up. Though the disciples were experienced sailors ‑ they were convinced that they could not handle this storm alone ‑ so they woke Jesus up and said, Master, don't you care about us. Can't you see that we are about to perish!
And the Bible says that Jesus arose and spoke to the sea, Peace Be Still ‑ and the angry waters and boisterous billows lay down like gentle lambs.
I would love to have been aboard that boat to hear the voice of Jesus speaking to the winds and waves. Someone has said that His voice is so sweet that the birds hush their singing. Jesus speaks and worlds come into being. Jesus speaks and the lame pick up their beds and walk. Jesus speaks and the dead comes back to life. Jesus speaks in Mark 4:39 and the wind ceased and there was a great calm. Then Jesus said to His disciples, why are you afraid?
If anyone here today is caught in a storm, Jesus is speaking to you, "why are you afraid?" Whatever storm you're facing, Jesus is speaking. Dont you hear Him asking, why are you afraid? I thought I needed to say before I open up the text, that Jesus is able to calm the storms in your life.
Jesus calmed the storm. They crossed the sea and made their way to the land of the Gadarenes. And when Jesus arrived in Gadara, they met a crazy man, a man who had lost his mind. This man lived in the cemetery. He hung around dead folk. Folk who weren't going anywhere.
Dead folk ‑folk who were confined and imprisoned in a tomb.
Dead folk ‑ no energy, ‑ no vitality no life.
He hung around dead folk.
This man was out of control. Look at verse 3. Even with a chain, they could not control him. They put shackles on him, but he broke them into pieces. He popped the chains apart. They couldn't tame him. They couldn't contain him ‑ he was out of control. He had lost his mind.
Let's look at him for a minute. He is wild and untamed and unrestrained. He has broken chains on his wrists and ankles.
This man was out of his mind. He had lost his mind. But here in the text, he meets Jesus. He was confused and disoriented, but in his confused state of mind, he makes his way to Jesus. This man had walked out on his wife, disowned and rejected his children, forsook his family ‑ left home and was hanging out with dead folk, but one day he met Jesus. This man was headed nowhere fast; Life was in shambles, he had hit rock bottom ‑but one day he met Jesus.
And when he met Jesus, Jesus asked him a question, "what is thy name?
This is one of the new revelations God showed me when I revisited this text. Jesus asked, in verse 9, what is thy name? But if you look at verse 8, you will note that Jesus had called for the unclean spirit to come out of the man, but the demon wouldn't move. So Jesus said what is thy name?
Brothers, before you can get rid of the demons, you've got to name the demon. You see demons are real. They are not just a figment of one's imagination. They are real. They are not a psychological product of one's religious ideology. Demons are real. They counter all that which is good and holy and just. Demons are evil spirits that are designed by Satan to create inner conflict in our spiritual being. Sometimes we like to say, "I just can't seem to pull it together." Well, the reason you can't pull it together is because the demons won't let you. Paul said in Ephesians 6:12.
Our modern scientific era has lulled us to sleep by robbing evil of its living terror. We have substituted other expressions for evil ‑ such as psychological complexes, sociological determinism, or biological urges. We depersonalize demons, and seek to explain away evil that demons might lose their frightening personal reality. Yet at the same time we will say, "You must be out of your mind!"
The Lord would have me remind you as your spiritual leader that demons are real, and that there is a war going on. Demons try to prevent our ascent to heaven. Demons want to deprive us of our blessings from God, and disrupt our communion with the Holy Spirit. Demons are real.
Jesus asked, "what is thy name? Before you can get rid of the demons, you've got to name the demon. In other words, you've got to acknowledge it. Don't ignore it. Don't try to pretend it's not there. Name it.
If the demon is drugs, name it. Alcoholism name it Sexual lusts name it Whoredom ‑ name it ‑ Perverted behavior, wife beating ‑ name it.
Abusing women ‑Don't want to pay child support ‑ Don't want to come home at night‑Sorry and lazy‑Don't want to work ‑ Think you know everything ‑ name it. Won't listen to any body ‑ won't go to church on Sunday ‑ anti‑church ‑ anti‑Christian. Bad attitude ‑ negative disposition always criticizing ‑ low down, mean, nasty and dirty.
What is thy name? Brothers, you've got to name it. Brothers, you've got to name it. In other words, acknowledge it. Don't go around acting like you've got it all together ‑ while all the time you are coming apart on the inside ‑ Name it.
Jesus has the power to call the demons out ‑ but He's waiting on you to name it. Jesus has the power to handle your situation, but He's waiting on you to name it. Jesus can fix your heart; regulate your mind, turn you around, cut loose your stammering tongue and place your feet on blessed boulevard, but He's waiting on you to name it.
He will put you in your right mind, if you just name it.
This crazy man in the text was out of his mind, but he met Jesus and the Bible says, The Lord put him in his right mind.
Now before I divide this text, let me show you what the Lord showed me in Verse 15 ‑ Notice that the people didn't get scared of the man until he was in his right mind.
The text says, "And when they came to Jesus, they saw the man who used to have this mob of demons in him. He was sitting there, clothed and in his right mind; and they were all afraid.
You see, brothers, we don't intimidate anybody as long as we're acting crazy. We are no threat to anybody as long as we are strung out on drugs ‑ shooting and killing one another ‑ disrespecting our women ‑ not supporting our children ‑ hanging out on the street corners ‑ but once you meet Jesus and Jesus puts you in your right mind ‑ you will become a threat ‑ and people will become afraid of you.
This crazy man met Jesus and Jesus put him in his right mind ‑ and when this man was put in his right mind ‑ three things happened.
When a man is in his night mind, first of all.
1. He will become a disciple of the Lord. In verse 18 and in Luke 8:37 the Bible says that the man who was now in his right mind said, Lord, let me go with you. You have come here and have healed me and I see that you have your disciples with you, and I want to become one of your disciples.
When a man is in his right mind, he will want to follow Jesus.
When Sunday morning comes, he wants to lead his family to God's house. He will say as Joshua did, "as for me and my house." I can't tell you how to run your house. I have no say so about where you are and what you do in your house. But my house, my house where God has placed me as head of my family, we will serve the Lord.
You see, a man in his right mind understands something of the genius of his creative order. He knows that God was at His very best when He made him. Genesis 2:7 says, God made man from the dirt of the ground.
And you do know that when he made woman, he did not return to the earth, but took her from the rib of man.
Man connects earth with heaven. In his body he is allied to the earth; in his soul he is allied to heaven. Man stands between earth and heaven as a connecting link. That's why when Adam and Eve sinned in the Garden of Eden ‑ God called out "Where are you Adam"
God expects man to lead the way in a responsible response to His goodness. Contrary to actual practice, men should lead the praise unto God. Why should the woman lead in worship and praise? Why should there be more women in church than men. After all, God gave us a holy connection with Him before he put man to sleep and formed the woman.
That's why when a man is in his right mind ‑ he won't mind praising God. When he's in his right mind ‑ he loves the Lord ‑ He knows about the goodness of God ‑ He knows that he is wonderfully made. You don't have to urge a man who is in his right mind to praise God, for he knows that God is good.
I don't know about you brothers, but I don't need anybody to tell me how good God is, I know that He is good. A man who is in his fight mind will become a disciple of the Lord.
2. A man who is in his right mind will respect his family. As long as the crazy man in the text was out of his mind, he forsook his family, walked out on his children, left home and was living among the dead. But as soon as he was put in his right mind, Jesus told him in Luke 8:39 to go home to your family. You see, when you're in your right mind, you don't run the streets all times of the night; hanging out at the night clubs every weekend; chasing every short skirt you see. But when you're in your right mind, you will go home to the wife God blessed you with and the children God blessed you to have.
You know that God requires three things of every man :
1. Provide for his family
2. Protect his family and
3. Lead his family
Jesus said that's all right about coming with me ‑ I'd rather you go home and take care of your family.
Third and finally. A man who is in his right mind has a job.
He loves the Lord; He loves his family and he has a job.
God sent that man, who is now in his right mind, in verse 27 to
his house to provide for his family ‑ to take care of his family ‑
When God created man, He intended for man to work. Paradise itself was not a place of exemption from work. God told man in Genesis 2:15 to dress the garden and keep it. God never intended for man to be lazy or irresponsible.
A man who is in his right mind has a job. He might love the Lord, love his family, but if he doesn't have a job ‑ he's only 2/3 man.
Now, this man had another job. A job that Jesus gave him. Jesus told him to go home and tell them what the Lord has done for them.
Tell them that the Lord has laid His hands on him. Tell them that I am the Bread of Life.
Tell them that I am the Water of Life.
